With Love from the DRR Conference – 1

日本語翻訳はこちらから

The Third UN WC DRR started on the 14th, to be held for five days; the meetings are to be held mainly in Sendai City. During the conference, we are expecting 40,000 guests from overseas and within the country.

It’s not only about leading figures from various countries attending the main conference – citizens are hosting Public Forums open to the public, volunteer staff are supporting activities such as operation or translation, and many guests are visiting the Public Forum – so many people are involved in this conference in their own way.

We are student journalists, supporting the conference as Volunteer Reporters – we interview the guests we meet at the Public Forum during the conference and ask for their message on a board, to introduce them on this page.

After that, one of us student journalists will ask for an interview.

This is the first of this series, so let us report about the voices from us, student journalists, who will be writing the articles for this page.

阿部絢美さん(21)=法政大

Ayami Abe(21), Hosei University

I want to collect the voices from those affected by the disaster and people who came to this event, to serve as an information source to many people who have not experienced earthquake disaster. Using this opportunity, I want to deliver many “peoples’ voices” through the theme of “DRR”.

鈴木絵梨香さん(21)=日本大

Erika Suzuki (21), Nihon University

I can spread our experience to other areas from Sendai where we have the heightened awareness for DRR due to the quake. As a messenger of the information, I would like to deliver a message about the importance of being prepared.

高橋萌絵さん(22)=山形大

Moe Takahashi (22) , Yamagata University

People will come to Sendai from all over the world, so I am looking forward to meeting them. It is so exciting. It would be great if I can also exchange some ideas with other student journalists.

梅村雅さん(22)=同志社大

Miyabi Umemura (22), Doshisha University

I will do my best to report accurately what is happening in the events. Now, I will go out to report the Disaster Reduction Workshop. I heard we can actually experience at the workshop. I am looking forward to it!

As mentioned above, we would like to report feedbacks on the events and meetings, impressions on Sendai, DRR concept from individual perspective, and such, as many as possible. We are mainly in the Sendai City Support Center for Civil Activities where Thematic Pavilion focuses on “Civil Society Collaboration and DRR.” If you have a chance to stop by, please leave us a message!

We look forward to meeting you!

The UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction has started today. It is being held for five days from March 14 – 18. The various forums, events, and meetings take place in Sendai city.

At the Sendai City Support Center for Civil Activities (Support Center) in Aoba-ward of Sendai City, the opening ceremony for the Public Forum was held.

At the Support Center, the Public Forum Thematic Pavilion focuses on “Civil Society Collaboration and DRR” and 34 exhibitions and events are to be held until March 17.

It shall be an opportunity where citizens join hands, international NGOs and NPOs collaborate with local communities, and show diverse ways of collaboration with the lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake in mind. At the opening ceremony which took place in the atrium of the center, Akira Watanabe, Head of City of Sendai Citizen Cooperation Promotion Bureau, said in the opening remarks, “I would like our locals to show the world that we are proactively taking actions.”
